Obituary of Jonathan Witherbee

Jonathan G. Witherbee died in Port Henry on August 25, 1875, at age 54. On his death, the New York Tribune noted:

“Mr Witherbee began his life without means, and succeeded in amassing a large fortune, owning one-third of the firm Witherbees Sherman and Company….

“Mr. Witherbee would be best remembered for his large-hearted generosity, multitudes of poor families having been supported by his bounty, bestowed without the knowledge of others. Young men starting in business, as well as many persons afflicted with distress or perplexity, have found in him a sympathetic friend, a wise counselor, and a practical helper.”
