Additional Notes And Comments
The Myers Residence is located at 194 Livingston Avenue, Albany 12210
The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence was a hub of anti-slavery activism in the Capital Region, receiving those who had escaped enslavement, and hosting Vigilance committee meetings. It was home to Stephen and Harriet Myers and their four children in the mid-1850’s. Stephen, along with Harriet, were leaders in the Underground Railroad movement in the Capital Region. in 1844, a renowned abolitionist in New York City proclaimed that, “Stephen Myers has the best run (UGRR) station in all of New York.” Born into enslavement, Stephen Myers was well aware of the reality of the institution of slavery. His advocacy on behalf of Freedom Seekers, the abolition of the institution of slavery, equity in housing, voting, jobs, and education, in concert with wife Harriet and their associates, are brought to life through programs offered at this historic site.
The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the National Park Service Network to Freedom, The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, and the NYS Underground Railroad Heritage Trail.
