LaSalle-Coke Crane

Situated in the borough of LaSalle, the LaSalle-Coke Crane is a cultural resource of the Lachine Canal National Historic Site and a major visual landmark that reflects the trans-shipment activity that made the waterway a bustling location at the turn of the 20th century.

At the time, many companies used lighting systems supplied by new types of manufactured gas. Some of the gases used were made from coke, a solid residue produced from the distillation of coal. In Montreal, LaSalle Gas, later known as LaSalle Coke, was one of the companies that produced this gas. The LaSalle-Coke Crane was built in 1913 on the southern bank of the Lachine Canal. Until 1967, it was used to transfer coal that arrived by boat onto the freight cars passing underneath it.
