Warrensburgh Museum of Local History

A large collection of photographs, clothing, and other fiber artifacts, tools, furniture, household objects, farm equipment, and memorabilia. Exhibits depicting the history of Warrensburg are arranged in chronological order, from Glacial to Global.

Located along the Schroon River, which provided ample opportunity for industrial water power, Warrensburg rose to preeminence in the 19th century with sawmills, industrial tanning, paper making, and clothing manufacture, which continued into the latter half of the 20th century. Year round: Wednesdays 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sundays 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, plus First Thursday of every month: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Also Saturdays, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM July and August.
Don’t Miss This When Visiting
Warrensburg’s Bicentennial exhibit – 200 years of growth, development, decline and change. This exhibit includes numerous photos plus a sampling of artifacts from the entire period. On display through October.

PLUS A special exhibit about Floyd Bennett, world-famous aviator who in 1926 piloted Commander Richard E. Byrd’s plane in the first-ever flight to the North Pole. Floyd was a Warrensburg native who rose from poverty to receive the military’s highest acclaim, the Medal of Honor, awarded by President Coolidge.

Warrensburg’s streets have numerous homes listed in the historic registry. Their architectural styles, ranging from Greek Revival to Craftsman Cottage, are documented at the museum.

Identify And Describe The Management Organization
The Warrensbugh Museum of Local History is operated for the Town of Warrensburg by the Warrensburgh Historical Society. This totally volunteer non-profit organization consists of more than 200 members. A part-time director, paid by the Town of Warrensburg, is the only paid staffmember. Museum guides and collections management are entirely volunteer.

Additional Notes And Comments
The 3-story building was constructed in 1926 by the International Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), a civic/social men’s organization. In 1975 the Town of Warrensburg contracted with the I.O.O.F. to create a local history museum on the main floor.

When membership of the I.O.O.F. declined the site was transferred to the V.F.W., which continues to function on the building’s lower level, while the museum expanded to include the top floor, currently used for storage and maintenance of the collection and office.

One exterior wall of the building contains a 70′ x 28′ mural depicting the history of Warrensburg. Painted in 1976 by the late Eva Cockcroft, the mural was restored with funds raised by the Warrensburgh Historical Society by muralist and theatrical set artist, Mary Lovendusky.
