The War of 1812 Museum operated by The Battle of Plattsburgh Association is dedicated to interpreting artifacts and materials significant to the Battle of Plattsburgh and the War of 1812 era.

The changing exhibit area currently features “Smuggling, Soldiering, Shipyards & Skirmishes: Prelude to the Battle of Plattsburgh.” The exhibit takes a chronological look back at the United States and the Champlain Valley of 200 years ago. Come see the Champlain Valley’s role in the grander scheme of the War of 1812. Explore the causes of the war and the ever-changing roles of the U.S. military during this period. How and why did the current events of the time hit home, affecting the lives of the citizens of New York, Vermont, and Canada? What role did the Lake Champlain region play in the War of 1812, beyond the Battle of Plattsburgh? Displays highlight artifacts loaned from the New York State Museum, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, and Fort Ticonderoga.

Exhibits in the Allan S. Everest Interpretive Center chronologically recount the events of the battles at Plattsburgh, the land and naval engagements at Plattsburgh, and the significant role that the battles here played in the final peace negotiations. A 5 ft. x 15 ft. diorama and an interactive scale model of the village and surrounding area provides the visitor with an aerial view of the battlefield of September 11th, 1814. Displays include artifacts from the battle, ship models, interactive displays and reproduction clothing.

Our KeyBank Gallery is home to Julian O. Davidson’s painting, The Battle of Lake Champlain, the Crab Island plaques and other works of art relating to the Battle of Plattsburgh.

In addition, The War of 1812 Museum is proud to be one of 200 participating museums across America to host the latest traveling mini-exhibit, “War of 1812: A Nation Forged by War” presented by The National Museum of the United States Navy. The display commemorates the 200-year anniversary of the War of 1812 and highlights the prominent role of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service in bringing Great Britain to the negotiating table and forcing European recognition of a truly independent United States. The exhibit tells the stories of heroic U.S. Navy crews in battles on the oceans and Great Lakes, as well as the contributions of sailors in celebrated land battles from Canada to Louisiana. IPhone users can use interactive scans on the display panels to watch short 3 minute films downloaded from YouTUBE.

In addition to the museum exhibit, visitors will enjoy a film titled September 11th, 1814: the Battles at Plattsburgh. This interpretive film, directed by Isaiah A. Galarza of Kavod Productions, offers an overview of the events surrounding the Battle of Plattsburgh (September 11, 1814). The 8 minute film is a key addition to the visitor experience, enhancing the understanding of the War of 1812 and the Battle of Plattsburgh.

For those of you that like to treat your self to a nice gift, The History Shoppe offers visitors a chance to buy souviners, books, toys, clothing, reenactment supplies, and unique locally crafted items. Season and Hours Open

Don’t missing viewing one of the most famous artworks of the Battle of Plattsburgh, The Battle of Lake Champlain by Julian O. Davidson. The oil on canvas painted in 1884, depicts the naval portion of the Battle of Plattsburgh. The artwork, donated by KeyBank, is on display in the KeyBank Gallery at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association’s museum.
