Log Village and Grist Mill Campground

Log Village and Grist Mill Campground is in Hartford, near Granville, Upstate New York. This is a new campground developed in an area historically known as the Log Village as the first settlers in 1782 built log cabins cut from the local trees. It is also the site of a historic grist mill that was built by Hezekiah Mann around 1810. This mill was refurbished and opened in 1977 as a historical tourist attraction until some time in 1990s when the owner became a little too old to look after it on his own. The farm and gristmill were bought by a couple, Hilary and Bob Oreschnick, in 2009 and they have built a campground on some of the land, with four yurts and spaces for dry camping RVs, and tents. It is a small family run camp with new bathrooms, shower rooms, a campfire and a library of antique books, newspapers and magazines. The grist mill will be refurbished and opened with an education center once grants have been found to support their development. Hartford also boasts a small museum situated in possibly the oldest building Hartford and was used as the Enlistment center for the Civil War. Number Of Camp Sites
Four furnished yurts are available to rent. There are two 20ft yurts with three sets of bunk beds, table and chairs, and a kitchenette with fridge freezer. They sleep up to six. There are two larger yurts of 24 ft, and 30ft diameter. They both have a queen bed, a pull out sofa bed, and two sets of bunk beds. They also have table and chairs and a kitchenette with fridge freezer. All yurts have TVs to play DVDs and they have free access to Wifi. There are a further 19 spaces for RVs (dry camping only) and tents.
It is a family friendly and pet friendly campsite with disabled access to yurts and bathrooms.
Campground Style
The camp ground is a quiet, small jewel, with nature as the attractions and entertainment. It is set alongside two streams and a large mill pond where a large grey heron makes it home every spring. We have wild ducks, turkey, deer, red tailed hawks, blue jays, trout and large mouth bass among others. A two mile walk across streams, alongside the mill pond and through the apple orchard is being developed for this spring.
It is a great base for groups and has both ATV and snowmobile trails running through all the way up to Canada. Because of its small size this camp is wonderful for families, couples, or groups.
The library is also where people check in and pick up a little shopping. There is still a library of antique and newer books for people to pick up and read. Some are for display only like the newspapers from the 1800s.
Facilities And Services
Disabled restroom with disabled access shower. Women’s and men’s restrooms and three shower rooms. Launderette with washing machine and dryer. Washing up sink. Large picnic deck. Picnic tables in various places around the site.
There is a small shop for provisions and basic camping needs, souvenirs and pocket money toys. Within the shop the library is available for readers of old and newer books alike.
The Gristmill can be seen across the mill pond. It is in need of repair and will be open it to visitors once completed.

Linens are available for an small additional cost. Fire pits and barbecue grills are also available at a small additional charge.

Four yurts and 19 spaces for RVs and tents.
Two 20 ft yurts sleep up to 6 each, and the two other yurts, 24 and 30 ft, sleep up to 8 each Total of 28 bed spaces. RVs and tents are assumed to have an average of four per pitch. Total number of people if full would be in the region of 104.
What Is Distinctive And Authentic To The Character Of The Region
The Grist Mill was an important part of Hartford as it grew. It did not just mill corn and grains, but the wheels also turned a 19 foot lathe and the millers also made furniture and household items. The lathe is still there and some of the millers wooden planes and wood working tools are still kept for interested visitors.
There are many streams, we think around six, that feed the mill pond. Lily pond is less than a quarter mile up hill from the camp ground and the gristmill owner has rights to the water flowing down from Lily pond. The campground opens again Friday 2 May 2014 and will be open year round. length of stay is not limited.
Additional Notes
A charming local Diner serves very reasonably priced fresh made food. There are a few small shops locally, a Stewart’s Shop, and hairdresser. Further afield there is easy access to Lake George, the Adirondack Park, Bennington,VT, Manchester Outlet shops, VT, Saratoga Racetrack, SPAC, and an hour’s drive to Albany the State capital. Fort Salem Theatre is a 30 minute drive down the road and the Charles Wood Theatre, the Glens Falls Symphony and The Hyde Collection art gallery are easy to find in Glens Falls, again 30 minutes drive.
