North Creek Depot Museum

The North Creek Depot Museum located in North Creek, NY on the site of the original Adirondack / D&H depot. The depot, built in 1872 was restored to its original condition between 1992 and 1999.

The site is a National and New York State registered historic site and the place where Theodore Roosevelt first learned that President McKinley had died and he had become the 26th President of the United States. The details of his harrowing Midnight Ride to the Presidency and many artifacts are displayed in what was originally the Ladies Waiting Room.

In the Gentleman’s Waiting Room the history of the development of the ski industry in New York State is foretold. The story of the very first rope tow, the Schenectady Wintersports Club’s Safety Committee (fore runner to the National Ski Patrol) and ski’s from 1920 – 1970 line the wall. Several videos of sking in the 1930s are playing for you enjoyment.

The original depot office now contains a 300 square foot model train diorama depicting North Creek exactly as it looked in 1935. Visitors of all ages are awed by it’s extreme attention to detail. Built by Dunham Studios, the diorama contains 97 feet of main line track and several trains running simultaneously.

The Baggage Room contains remnants of the Office and numerous D&H artifacts – remembrances of days long past, and on your way out you might want to visit our gift shop.

Don’t Miss This When Visiting
Saratoga/North Creek Railway with service to Saratoga and all points along the line begins at this historic site. The trains have domed dining or double decker coach cars.

Other ‘Things To Do’ in the area include Gondola rides up Gore Mountain, white water rafting, panning for garnet at the Gore Garnet Mine or just a stroll up main street to visit some of the quaint shops.

Identify And Describe The Management Organization
The North Creek Depot Museum is owned by the North Creek Railway Depot Preservation Association a 501 (c) 3 corporation and is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents. The Museum relies on donations and fund raisers to maintain this historic site and hold and display artifacts of the culture and history of the region especially those related to Theodore Roosevelt, logging, mining, skiing and the railroad. The Museum operates with a very knowledgeable volunteer staff. Exhibits are changed regularly to give the museum a ‘fresh’ look to make each visit as enjoyable as possible.

Additional Notes And Comments
While parents view the exhibits say ‘I remember those’ kids are fascinated by the train diorama (some very old kids also). A family friendly attraction.
