North Creek Ski Train
The hamlet of North Creek sits on the west shore of the Hudson River in the town of Johnsburg which is located in the Northwest corner of Warren County, New York. North Creek was the last station of a railroad line that was completed in 1871 that ran northward from Saratoga Springs.
With the advent of the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid, many locals around North Creek began to make ski trails. By 1934, the Delaware & Hudson ski train was in service from Schenectady to North Creek. These trains carried as many as 700 skiers per trip. Many local businesses provided busses and trucks to carry passengers to the higher trails in the area. The trains continued to run through the early 1940’s and brought skiers from stations as far south as New York City.
The rail line from Saratoga to North Creek has changed hands several times over the years, but now Iowa Pacific Holdings operates the Saratoga and North Creek Railway and is offering a snow train Fridays through Sundays for the 2011-2012 winter ski season. In addition, the North Creek Depot Museum will be open those days when the snow train runs, and among their many exhibits is a replica of the ski trains of the 1930’s. Don’t Miss This When Visiting
