Schroon Lake

Schroon Lake was founded after the American Revolution because its river valley, running north to south, creates a natural corridor for transportation. Schroon River is the easternmost tributary of the Hudson, which flows south into the Atlantic Ocean at New York City. Interestingly, Schroon is only twenty-some miles from Lake George and Lake Champlain, which run south to north and enter the Atlantic through the St. Lawrence River in Canada.

Schroon’s corridor through the mountains made it possible for people to travel through the eastern Adirondacks. First, the Great Northern Turnpike was built, after which people came to Schroon Lake by steamboat. Later Route 9 became the main route from Albany to Montreal. In the 1960’s the Adirondack Northway, which runs near Schroon Lake, made it possible for people to reach many Adirondack destinations safely and easily.

Today Schroon Lake is a wonderful base camp for exploring all that the Adirondacks have to offer. The lake is 9 miles long, so boating, swimming, water skiing and fishing are very popular. Local events like the weekly square dances, 4th of July celebration, charity duck race, musical performances, art shows, and the yearly Adirondack Marathon keep visitors entertained. Hiking in the nearby wilderness areas of Hoffman Notch and Pharaoh gives a truly authentic outdoor experience. Tennis, rafting and enjoying the beach are also popular summer activities. Winter brings a quiet beauty to the mountains and both visitors and locals enjoy snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing on the frozen lake.  In all seasons, visitors can stroll and shop in the scenic village or dine in one of the town’s many restaurants. In the evening, catch a show at the Seagle Music Colony or the latest movie at The Strand movie theater. Our clear Adirondack skies make for excellent star gazing as well.

Schroon Lakers are proud of their history and our local knowledge runs deep. Visitors can visit the Historical Society office to get a glimpse of the rich history of the area. Consider the site of the grand old Leland House, the glamorous Schroon Manor, or the old tanneries where ancestors made their living. Or visit the Seagle Music Colony, which has trained vocal singers from around the country for nearly 100 years.

People come to Schroon and Paradox Lakes now for the same reasons that they always have, to fish, swim and enjoy boating, to eat and drink well, to have fun and to relax. Discover this area with your family and start your own getaway traditions.
