Underground Railroad Stone Chair

Along the backroads of Washington County is what appears to be a stone chair with engraved markings. It dates from 1841 and local historians believe it was a map for fugitive slaves. It depicts a fort, a mountain, a smokestack, and a sailboat. Historian Paul Loading suggested that the engravings depicted a route through Fort Ann, past a blast furnace and to a boat that was waiting at the inlet at South Bay on Lake Champlain.
