Atwater Market Wharf at the Lachine Canal National Historic Site

Located right in the heart of Montreal, the Lachine Canal runs 14.5 km from the Old Port to Lake Saint-Louis. Much more than an inland waterway, the canal is an accessible urban park that leads you through the city’s must-see attractions, breathtaking views of the skyline and more than 150 years of industrial and navigational history.

Be sure to stop along the way at the Atwater Market to savour the thousand and one flavours of fresh produce and treats from local merchants, vendors and farmers! The wharf situated between Lock Nos. 3 and 4 has many spaces available for mooring, both for the day time and overnight. As you navigate your way through the market, let your senses be your guide through the stalls of fresh and savoury products bursting with colour. In addition to the market’s cafes and boutiques, numerous counters serve up rapid, innovative dishes that you can enjoy on the spot or by the waterside. There is also a nearby grocery store, liquor store and metro station.

While you’re there, take advantage of the stop to stretch your sea legs by walking or biking along the canal’s path. Rental services are located on the canal’s banks near the wharf. You can also use the Parks Canada kiosk’s free WiFi Internet access to download Explora. This free mobile app turns your smartphone into an interactive guide so that you can tour the surrounding neighbourhood and learn about its history while accompanied by sounds and images from the past. During the operating season, lockage services are offered to boaters navigating the Lachine Canal. Day and night docking is also available at the Parks Canada Wharf near the Atwater Market.

Additional Notes
The Lachine Canal is 14.5 km long and boats navigate through a 14-m difference in water levels. There are five locks in the canal and the minimum transit time is 3 hours from one entry point to the other. Please note that the overhead clearance on the Lachine Canal is 2.4 m (8 feet) and that the draught is 2 m (6 feet, 6 inches) deep. At Lock Nos. 1 and 5, be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before the last lockage.

Tolls, Passes and Permits

Single lockage, single lockage & return, and one day permits for locks along Parks Canada’s historic canals are available only in facilities located along waterways as well as at boat shows taking place in 2015.
