Lake George Association Floating Classroom
The Lake George Association was founded in 1885, during the height of the conservation movement. It is the oldest lake protection non-profit organization in the United States. The LGA and its members protect the beauty and quality of Lake George, the Queen of American Lakes.
The LGA’s Floating Classroom is a hands-on aquatic adventure for all ages. On board the 40-ft catamaran, visitors and students investigate the Lake George ecosystem, learn what makes Lake George unique, and find out what they can do to keep the Lake healthy.
Programs for schools, tour groups, youth groups, municipalities and homeowners are customized to meet each group’s specific needs. Two-hour trips for the general public are offered on Wednesdays in July and August at 10 am and 12:30 pm, and reservations are required. The boat is docked just north of Shepard Park in the Village of Lake George, at the end of Amherst street.

How this Experience is Distinctive and Authentic to the Character of the Region
On the Floating Classroom, participants have the opportunity to learn how Lake George is different from other lakes, how long it is, how many islands it has, how it was formed, etc. Participants capture and identify the zooplankton that lives in the Lake, measure water clarity using a Secchi disk, and test water chemistry. Participants also learn about specific environmental threats to our region including invasive species, and pollution from the over-use of fertilizers, and from increased stormwater runoff.
