Lock No. 5 at the Lachine Canal National Historic Site

Located right in the heart of Montreal, the Lachine Canal runs 14.5 km from the Old Port to Lake Saint-Louis. Much more than an inland waterway, the canal is an accessible urban park that leads you through the city’s must-see attractions, breathtaking views of the skyline and more than 150 years of industrial and navigational history.

The western entry point to the Lachine Canal is situated in Old Lachine, where the canal meets Lake Saint-Louis. The area is known for its extraordinary natural setting and its splendid riverside park – an ideal place for a stroll or a picnic. Staff at the Lachine Visitor Services Centre next to Lock No. 5 will be pleased to share with you all there is to know and discover in a neighbourhood whose history goes back more than 2500 years! In the evening, the restaurants and patios lining Saint-Joseph Boulevard are also the perfect place to sit down for a meal and watch the sun set over Lake Saint-Louis. Services Offered
During the operating season, lockage services are offered to boaters navigating the Lachine Canal. Day and night docking is also available at the Parks Canada Wharf upstream from Lock No. 5. The Lachine Visitor Services Centre, a multiservice building with lookout terraces, is just steps away from the canal and is also home to the Panini Rossi Bistro, which offers a variety of fresh and affordable products. Open seven days a week, it is an ideal location to take a break and relax.

Additional Notes
The Lachine Canal is 14.5 km long and boats navigate through a 14-m difference in water levels. There are five locks in the canal and the minimum transit time is 3 hours from one entry point to the other. Please note that the overhead clearance on the Lachine Canal is 2.4 m (8 feet) and that the draught is 2 m (6 feet, 6 inches) deep. At Lock Nos. 1 and 5, be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before the last lockage.

Tolls, Passes and Permits

Single lockage, single lockage & return, and one day permits for locks along Parks Canada’s historic canals are available only in facilities located along waterways as well as at boat shows taking place in 2015.

Seasonal lockage and mooring permits, transit permits or six-day permits can be purchased online as well as at Parks Canada facilities on the historic canals. Visit the Parks Canada Website for the complete fees information.
