Locks Nos, 1-2-3 at the Chambly Canal National Historic Site

The first three locks of the Chambly Canal National Historic Site are located on the Chambly Basin and serve as one of two entry points on the canal. These step locks are still manually operated and are unique to Quebec. The Chambly Canal, which opened along the Richelieu River in 1843, played a leading role in the Quebec forest product industry and in shipping these products to the burgeoning United States market.

Today, the Chambly Canal remains a popular destination for residents, visitors and boaters alike and offers an array of activities and events to partake in. Its natural setting and rich heritage provide the perfect escape into the heart of the region’s history.

It certainly takes more than a single visit to the Chambly Canal to enjoy everything the Richelieu Valley has to offer! Services Offered
During the operating season, lockage services are offered to boaters navigating the Chambly Canal. Day and night docking is also available at the Parks Canada wharf downstream from Locks Nos. 1-2-3.

Restaurants and bistros, featuring local cuisine and up-and-coming trends, line the neighbouring Avenue Bourgogne. Outdoor terraces in the area provide magnificent views of Mont-Saint-Hilaire reflected in the water. In the summer, a variety of events, including outdoor concerts, are held in the Parc des Ateliers, an exceptional green space located upstream from Lock No. 3. Walkers, joggers and cyclists alike can also travel along the Chambly Canal path, a 20-km trail which links the towns of Chambly and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. The path is part of the Trans Canada Trail and Route Verte No. 1 Circuit and provides breath-taking sceneries as well as endless opportunities to discover the abounding flora and wildlife.

Additional Notes
The Chambly Canal is 20 km long and boats navigate through a 24-m difference in water levels. Eight of the nine locks are still manually operated and both swing and lift bridges are crossed during an excursion through the canal. The minimum transit time is 4 hours from one entry point to the other. At Locks Nos. 1-2-3, be sure to arrive at least 45 minutes before the last lockage.

Tolls, Passes and Permits

Single lockage, single lockage & return, and one day permits for locks along Parks Canada’s historic canals are available only in facilities located along waterways as well as at boat shows taking place in 2015.
