Flat Rock Camp

Flat Rock is owned by the Paine Family and it is an extraordinary natural area of glaciated Potsdam sandstone rock. Almost all of the soil was removed by glaciers and an unusual population of pitch pines, mosses, wildflowers, and other vegetation lives on the almost bare stone here. There is a boathouse north of the great camp with a marine rail road. The old Flat Rock Camp is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Historic Landing. It is a large property, across which many historic events have taken place, such as General Burgoyne’s invasion and camp.

The mouth of the Boquet River was also an important fishing site for the first settlers. They stretched long nets across the river mouth to net salmon and other fish feeding and breeding in the river. Additional Notes And Comments
The entire Paine property, stretching some 3 miles north from the mouth of the Boquet River to Flat Rock Camp and beyond (and some two miles up the river) is private and not open to the public. No trespassing signs are prominently displayed.
