Musee du Haut-Richelieu

Musée du Haut-Richelieu stands proudly in the heart of Vieux-Saint-Jean where, in the past, the old public market and the fire station pump existed. Active since 1971, the Museum contributes to spead the region’s history and promotes ancient and contemporary Quebec ceramics.

Offering rich programs, various activities and numerous artifacts, the museum presents the individuals and events that contributed to shaping the current Haut-Richelieu landscape. It also helps us discover the traditional know-how related to the region’s history that is still present nowadays: pottery. Season and Hours Open
Opened everyday during summer. Sunday to Friday from 11 am to 5 pm and on Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. Also opened during winter except for Mondays.Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm.

Permanent exhibition: Crossroads

The Haut-Richelieu region is historically rich in military, social, economical and political matters. Its priviliged geographic position, on the banks of Richelieu River, makes it a meeting place influencing not only the region but the entire province’s development. From the Amerindians to the arrival of first Europeans, from the setting of first communities to the building of first Canadian railroad, between St-Jean and La Prairie, from patriots’ rebellion to industrial growth, Haut-Richelieu was a witness as well as an actor not only in its own story but also influenced all Quebec’s history.

Haut-Richelieu is a very important place in Canada for pottery. Saint-Jean and Iberville were given the title of “ceramic capital of Canada” in the old days.

History and ceramic lovers, you must pay a visit to our exhibition, Crossroads. It will lead you to the discovery of a region’s origin and influences!

Temporary Exhibition : Plein Sport until September 11th.

Sports always took an important place in Haut-Richelieu region. True moments of social meetings, sporting events revealed and honoured many athletes. Some of them were even famous outside of the region.

In this exhibition we see side by side many sports that were very popular at certain times. Sports in Haut-Richelieu…a rich history to discover!

Additional Notes And Comments
The Musée du Haut-Richelieu stands proudly on the Place du Marché where was the fire station in Saint-Jean years ago. Every Wednesdays and Saturdays during summer, the Place du Marché welcomes farmers and producers coming to sell their fresh products.

Group tours are welcome by reservation. Please call ahead.
