Ore Bed Harbor

In September of 1868, chemist and mineralogist Professor Herring described Split Rock Mountain as containing “the largest deposit of Magnetic Ore in the State of New York, and as yet I have seen none to equal it in the United States.” The altered landscape of the shoreline of Ore Bed Harbor is all the remains of the magnetite iron-ore mining that took place here in the 1860s. This was also the site of a complete mini village with store, all connected to the lakefront via wooden staircase up the mountain side. Related Sites Or Experiences
