Cable Ferry (Fort Ticonderoga Ferry)

The cable ferry has been operating here, connecting Ticonderoga, NY, with Shoreham, VT, since 1759. A double-ended sailing scow was used for many years beginning in 1800. The sail ferry had a sail that would swing completely around to reverse course from one side to the other. It was steered with a sweep that could be mounted on either end of the boat. A steam ferry was run in the 1870s and the steam ferry barge, Ethan Allen was run in the 1880s. In 1946, a cable system was installed. The WWI surplus pontoon barge Fort Ticonderoga began service in 1949. In 1959, its successor, also a barge, Ticonderoga II took over, powered by the converted tug Ethan Allen (and later replaced by Addie B, in 1979). Ticonderoga II is a 94-ton barge with room for fifteen to eighteen cars. Services Offered
